Chongqing: A Smarter Manufacturing Hub

Chongqing is one of the six major old industrial bases in China and the largest economic center in the upstream area of the Yangtze River. In 2022, the number of market entities exceeded 3.4 million, with a total GDP of nearly 420 billion US dollars. It has a strong industrial foundation and a complete range of manufacturing industries. The annual automobile production has peaked at 3.16 million vehicles, ranking first in China. For every three laptops and every 20 mobile phones globally, one is made in Chongqing, earning it the nickname “the Detroit of the East.”

Relying on its strong manufacturing base, the industrial design industry in Chongqing has continually prospered. As of 2022, there are 165 municipal-level industrial design centers and 10 national-level industrial design centers in the city. In 2022, the sales revenue of design products exceeded 210 billion yuan for the first time, and the design service income exceeded 300 million yuan, highlighting the continuous role of industrial design as a driving force. The city has established a total of 10 industrial design master studios, 46 manufacturing design training bases, 25 design-leading demonstration enterprises, 18 CMF (Color, Material, and Finish) design studios, 18 design-driven rural revitalization demonstration towns, 13 community service stations for people’s designers, and 8 entrepreneur workstations driven by design. To advance the development of the City of Design, the city has handpicked the first batch of 83 key projects, with a combined investment exceeding 3 billion yuan.
