Academic Research

In the field of creative design, Chongqing has built a diverse academic research system, which bolsters the growth of the creative design industry. The Sichuan Fine Arts Institute offers a doctoral program in Design Studies and is a member of the Cumulus Association, the only global alliance of art, design, and media institutions formally recognized by UNESCO. The institute continuously injects design intelligence into industrial upgrading, urban renewal, rural revitalization, and the enhancement of quality of life. It leads in areas such as “Green Design Technology Innovation and Sustainable Development”, “Unlocking the Integration Model of ‘Intangible Cultural Heritage + Tourism'”, “Artisan Craftsmanship Inheritance and Promotion”, “Research on Ba-Yu Cultural Tourism,” and “Culinary Culture of Chuan Cuisine and Hot Pot.”

The journals “Packaging Engineering” and “Industrial & Engineering Design” are overseen by the China South Industries Group Co., Ltd, and facilitated by the Southwest Technology and Engineering Research Institute. “Packaging Engineering” is mainly academic-oriented, advocating design for people’s livelihoods, and persistently disseminating novel design concepts. “Industrial & Engineering Design” caters to all professional design-related fields and industries, tracking and reporting on significant engineering projects, providing a platform for discussions on design theory research, design strategy research, and design practices, and promoting high-quality development in the modern industry.

The National Industrial Design Conference is held every two years. Leveraging the platform of the Chinese core journal “Packaging Engineering”, it hosts professional academic exchange activities. Each session gathers and attracts nearly a hundred authoritative experts and scholars in the field of industrial design, making it a nationally influential academic conference in industrial design.

Design Education

Chongqing has a well-developed creative design education system, with 20 universities offering top-notch teaching in industrial design, environmental design, visual communication design, digital media design, and other areas, and 36 vocational and technical colleges providing systematic vocational education in art and design, engineering design, handicraft design, and other disciplines. Industry associations and organizations in the field of creative design offer training courses for skill enhancement and creative empowerment, continuously updating the concepts and skills of professional designers and fostering their passion for design. Each year, tens of thousands of creative design professionals participate in further learning programs.

The “Huxi Artists Community” at the Sichuan Fine Arts Institute provides a retention program for young artists worldwide. More than 30,000 companies, including Changan Auto and Zonsen Group, as well as design parks and industrial design parks in Chongqing, offer internships and training opportunities for related personnel. Over 200 community-resident designer workstations provide daily creative design training in areas such as floral design, soft furnishing design, and dress collocation, benefiting around 5 million person-time.

Public cultural institutions such as museums, science and technology exhibitions, libraries, and cultural centers regularly provide free cultural and artistic courses, lectures, and materials to citizens, offering lifelong learning opportunities.

Meanwhile, Chongqing has established mechanisms and systems for cultural and creative courses targeting different levels and groups, promoting the integration of design culture into the city. In preschool education, art games and activities suitable for children’s physical and mental development are conducted to sow the seeds of creative design. In primary schools, cultural heritage, art appreciation, and innovative abilities are cultivated through courses in music, fine arts, calligraphy, and other subjects, with no less than four class hours per week. At the junior high school level, diversified teaching methods and scenarios, such as “aesthetic classes + aesthetic activities in clubs + community art education,” are employed to develop students’ core abilities in “aesthetic foundation + artistic skills + design innovation,” with no less than two class hours per week in junior high and no less than three credits per semester in the senior high. At the university level, a teaching system composed of three-course clusters, namely “design foundation + design procedures and methods + specialized and practical design,” has been established in undergraduate and vocational colleges across the city, integrated into the talent cultivation programs and credit management, with no less than two credits per semester.
