China-Singapore (Chongqing) Design Education Summit Kicks off
The 2023 China-Singapore (Chongqing) Design Education Summit was held at the Chongqing Yuelai International Convention Center on September 5.
Themed “New Mission of Design Education · China-Singapore Exchange and Inspiration for Future”, the summit leverages the benefits of the China-Singapore (Chongqing) Demonstration Initiative on Strategic Connectivity to promote design education exchange and mutual understanding between China and Singapore, enhance the internationalization of design education in Chongqing and the integration of industry and education in design education, build a platform for the international exchange and cultivation of design talents, as well as empower Chongqing to build a City of Design.

“China-Singapore International Design Talents Training Plan” Launch Ceremony
Wen Qixiang, Vice Chairman of the China-Singapore (Chongqing) Industrial Design Co., Ltd., presided over the “China-Singapore International Design Talents Training Plan” launch ceremony during the summit.

It is reported that this plan is jointly initiated by China-Singapore (Chongqing) Industrial Design Co., Ltd., together with some key universities, polytechnics, scientific research institutions, industry associations, and well-known design companies in Singapore. Chongqing will take advantage of Singapore’s experience in the development of the design industry and the two sides will jointly cultivate high-end international design talents and design management professionals. This plan is supported by the Chongqing Municipal Economy and Informatization Commission, China-Singapore (Chongqing) Demonstration Initiative on Strategic Connectivity Administration Bureau, and DesignSingapore Council.
Experts Gather to Talk about Design Education
The summit invited leaders and representatives from the Design Business Chamber Singapore and Chongqing Industrial Design Vocational Education Group, experts and scholars from the Singapore University of Technology and Design, Singapore Polytechnic, and Sichuan Fine Arts Institute, to deliver topic speeches and share views on innovative trends of design education in the new era.
During this period, Duan Shengfeng, Vice President of Sichuan Fine Arts Institute, led us to look forward to the modernization of design education in China from an international perspective; Tan Yen Yen, Member of Singapore Design Education Advisory Committee, shared the experience of design education in Singapore; Kimming Yap, Executive Committee Member of the Design Business Chamber Singapore, explained the exploration and practice of design education in Singapore; John Leong Kit Hoong, Director at Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD) Academy and Hock Meng Yew, Adjunct Senior Fellow in SUTD Academy, discussed concepts and changes based on the construction of design major at SUTD; Toh Ser Khoon, Director of the School of Industry and Partnerships of Singapore Polytechnic, shared the concept of industry-teaching integration for Singapore’s industrial design; Liang Liangliang, Chairman of Chongqing Industrial Design Vocational Education Group, talked about an innovative practice of industrial design talent cultivation under grouping school running.

Enterprise Representatives Meet to Explore Talent Cultivation
There was a Round-Table Dialogue on the topic of “Design Education and Designer Training from a Business Perspective”, in which representatives of enterprises from China and Singapore engaged, including Jeremy Sun, Senior Director of Orcadesign, Yong Jieyu, Co-Founder of STUCK Design, Deng Xin, Deputy General Manager of Changan Automobile Global Design Center, Yu Wenhuai, Managing Director of Chongqing Dusse Technology Co., Ltd., Xie Chuanyong, Head of Intelligent Connected Vehicle Design Talent Cultivation Base of Chongqing Industry Polytechnic College. This event was presided over by Xia Jinjun, Vice Dean of the School of Arts of Chongqing University.
They discussed and shared insights, from the perspective of enterprise development, about design education and designer training, and explored more creative ideas for design talent cultivation.

In the future, under the China-Singapore (Chongqing) Demonstration Initiative on Strategic Connectivity, Chongqing and Singapore will promote exchange and interaction between entrepreneurs and designers to boost a deeper understanding of the market environment, industrial categories, product characteristics, and enterprise information. With Chongqing’s huge industrial design demand combined with Singapore’s outstanding design capabilities, we can make more contributions to mutual benefits and win-win cooperation.
China-Singapore International Design Talent Development Program
This program is initiated by China-Singapore (Chongqing) Industrial Design Co., Ltd., under in-depth cooperation with Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD) and Singapore Polytechnic (SP).
According to the program, a high-level international design talent training system will be created from three levels as follow.
- University-level: China-Singapore (Chongqing) Industrial Design Co., Ltd. will collaborate with SUTD and SP, relying on higher education background and research capabilities, to create more high-level, interdisciplinary design and a high-level international design talent training system.
- Poly-Level: China-Singapore (Chongqing) Industrial Design promotes a vocational education cooperation program featuring design education, in conjunction with Singapore’s Polytechnic system embodied by SP.
- Professionals-Level: China-Singapore (Chongqing) Industrial Design conducts training for experienced professional designers and creates design workshops to help enhance professional design capabilities.
