Chongqing Design Meets Smart Manufacturing | Episode 7: Digital Intelligence Platform Builds the Foundation, Painting a New Chapter in Industrial Design

Industrial design has become the core enabler for Chongqing’s manufacturing industry to leap to higher value in the industrial chain and achieve iterative upgrades.

As the only world “City of Design” in western China, cutting-edge creative concepts have deeply intersected with Chongqing’s century-old industrial heritage. A large number of “Chongqing Design” masterpieces—distinguished by their aesthetics, quality, strength, and potential—are emerging and gaining acclaim across the Bashu region.

The “Chongqing Design Meets Smart Manufacturing” series presents a panoramic view of Chongqing‘s landmark industrial design projects of 2025. Through words and lenses, the series will immerse you in the mutually reinforcing journey between industrial design and Chongqing manufacturing.

On May 24, the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center once again captured global attention. Astronauts Zhu Yangzhu, Zhang Zhiyuan, and Li Jiaying, aboard the Shenzhou-19 manned spacecraft, soared into the vast expanse of the cosmos. Behind this glory of space exploration lies the power of Chongqing-based design: the departure boots and spacesuit cable integration bags used by the astronauts were meticulously crafted by the School of Design at Sichuan Fine Arts Institute.

This strength in aerospace aesthetics has been well established. In September 2024, the China Manned Space Agency released the design proposal for the nation‘s first lunar spacesuit to the world. The proposal, which deeply integrates classic elements of traditional Chinese culture and achieves a harmonious fusion of space technology, visual art, and cultural heritage, won the Gold Award at the 14th National Exhibition of Fine Arts—the highest honor in China’s art world, the “China Art Gold Award.” The entire design proposal was also created by Sichuan Fine Arts Institute.

From the presentation of these aerospace equipment design achievements to the open sharing of industrial design resources, Sichuan Fine Arts Institute‘s Chongqing Industrial Design Center developed the “Industrial and Digital Intelligence Design Data Platform.” This platform, used for multimodal demonstrations and comprehensive big-data analysis, serves as a key design vehicle for linking industry needs and extending design services. The platform aggregates vast core resources, including industrial design models and CMF material libraries, building a comprehensive service system that integrates data resource supply, intelligent design tool empowerment, and the commercialization of industrial outcomes. The screen displays real-time updates of extensive industrial design materials, standardized product model libraries, user demand analysis, and other data resources. Through AI-powered intelligent search, automatic solution matching, and parametric modeling, designers can efficiently complete the development and design of complete solutions for various high-end equipment projects. The platform is also open to manufacturing enterprises across the city, government agencies at all levels, and various public institutions, providing professional services such as data resource sharing and public industrial design services. It empowers local smart manufacturing with digital design and supports the development of Chongqing‘s “33618” modern manufacturing cluster system.

Sichuan Fine Arts Institute has also leveraged this digital intelligence design platform to produce dynamic presentations, scenario-based simulations, and data-driven interpretations in the fields of intelligent vehicle innovation design and green ecological design, yielding multiple significant outcomes: the “All-Terrain Rescue Vehicle” emergency transport equipment design won the National Art Gold Award (the first industrial design gold award); the “INTERGATOR Fire Rescue Integrated Device” won the China Excellent Industrial Design Award; and “Yangtze Pulse – Yangtze River National Cultural Park Water Ecology Information and Interaction Design Installation” received a nomination award at the 14th National Exhibition of Fine Arts.
