Good News! Chongqing Jiaotong University Won the Grand Prize in the World University Students’ Bridge Design Competition 2023

On June 17, the final of the World University Students’ Bridge Design Competition 2023 was held at the China Optics Valley Convention and Exhibition Center in Wuhan, China. After stages of review by the jury and fierce on-site competition, the entry of Chongqing Jiaotong University, “The Journey of a Legendary Landscape Painting – “Art Cloud Path” Pedestrian Landscape Bridge Design Scheme Series” (mentored by Zeng Qiang and Cai Xiaoyan), won the sole Grand Prize with the highest score, 9.48 points, in this competition. This is another remarkable achievement following their last Grand Prize in 2022.

At the same time, our university’s entries “Dian with a White Spoon” (mentored by Zeng Qiang and Wu Xi) and “Boundless Bridge – Integrated Riverside Pedestrian Landscape Trestle for the Expansion of Residential Living Space” (mentored by Chen Ziqian and Yang Jun) also made it to the top 10 in the finals and both won the Second Prizes. The entries “Thousand Miles of Rivers and Mountains·Dancing into the Future – Art Cloud Path Pedestrian Landscape Bridge Design Scheme Series” (mentored by Zeng Qiang and Cai Xiaoyan), “Ring Edge Bridge” (mentored by Chen Ziqian and Yang Jun), “Rongrong Bridge” (mentored by Yang Hongyun), “Nandou – Stepping Stars Bridge” (mentored by Yang Jun), and “Hanging Wings” (mentored by Chen Ziqian and Wu Xi) won the Third Prizes. Zeng Qiang, Cai Xiaoyan, Chen Ziqian, Wu Xi, and Yang Jun received the Outstanding Mentor Award, and Chongqing Jiaotong University was awarded the Outstanding Organization Award.

“In this competition, the Grand Prize, three top 10 entries, and a record-breaking number of awards, all those achievements would not have been possible without the strong support of departments, related colleges, and teachers from various disciplines across the entire university,” the outstanding mentor representative, Professor Zeng Qiang from Art Design College said, “In particular, I would like to express my gratitude to Professor Zhou Shuixing and Professor Du Bosong from the School of Civil Engineering for their guidance on the structural analysis of bridges. I would also like to thank Xu Jie, Deputy Minister of the Communication Department of the University CPC Committee, and Yu Zongfang, the Organizer of the Art Design College CPC Committee, for their support and encouragement to the participating teams. The achievements we have attained are the result of the collaborative efforts and hard work of interdisciplinary teams of teachers and students. They also reflect the results of the introduction of the Bauhaus modern design system into bridge art and design, which has been supported by Professor Gerhard Matthias, the recipient of the Chinese Government Friendship Award and the international master of design education. These achievements highlight our characteristic advantages in the interdisciplinary integration of “transportation + art” in recent years.

The World University Students’ Bridge Design Competition is an international event co-hosted by the China Highway and Transportation Society and CCCC Highway Consultants Co., Ltd. As an important part of the World Transport Convention (WTC) “Forum, Exhibition, and Competition,” the competition has been well received and recognized by university students and the community, both domestically and internationally. It has generated a significant international influence.
