Yan Wei, Design Director of Chongqing Kinway Ceramics Daily Consumer Goods National Industrial Design Center, has received multiple awards in competitions such as the “China Distinctive Tourism Commodities Competition,” the “Chongqing Gifts Tourism Commodities Competition,” and the “Red Dot Award.” He has also been recognized in events like the Smart Expo Cup Industrial Design Competition and China International Industry Fair. As the leader of a national-level industrial design innovation platform, Yan Wei regularly collaborates with renowned domestic and international universities on cooperative projects and promotes the transformation of research results into far-sighted innovative products.
Yan Wei’s career began with simple interest. Since he was a child, he has been loving tinkering with various gadgets and would often disassemble and reassemble household appliances. He also designed many small handicrafts, such as desk lamps. His passion for design and love for life enriched his extracurricular activities. With his childhood dream in mind, Yan Wei was admitted to the Industrial Design Department of the Academy of Arts & Design, Tsinghua University (formerly the Central Academy of Arts and Crafts), where he completed his undergraduate and graduate studies.
“When I saw that Tsinghua University’s Academy of Arts & Design offered a major in industrial design, I silently determined that it was the goal I wanted to pursue.” Yan Wei said. During his subsequent studies, Yan Wei had the opportunity to receive guidance from renowned Chinese industrial design masters such as Liu Guanzhong, Lu Xiaobo, and Zhao Chao, which further cultivated his design “skills.”
From designing small crafts as a child to gradually becoming a well-known industrial designer in the field, Yan Wei has pursued his path with great resolution, and his original intention of using design to make life better has never wavered.
Insisting on exploration in various fields such as household appliances, personal communication, professional equipment, and ceramic product design, Yan Wei breaks through industry boundaries and integrates technology, creativity, and culture to find more profound methods of problem-solving.
For example, Yan Wei and his team focused their design innovation on the “health” aspect of ceramic products through the development of self-sterilizing ceramics. Using Kinway ceramics, they spent five years and conducted nearly a thousand experiments to create a ceramic manufacturing process with antibacterial properties. This process ensures that the antibacterial effectiveness against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus on the tableware surface exceeds 99%. Users can rely on natural rinsing and drying without the need for a dishwasher or sterilizer to achieve continuous antibacterial effects on the surface.
“Normally, after washing the used tableware, residues of Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus will remain on the surface. However, on the surface of our designed ceramic product, the counts of these two bacteria will continuously decrease over time. And this product ensures consumers’ life to be more convenient and healthier.” Yan Wei explained.
Aesthetic design is also equally important. Yan Wei’s team extracts traditional Chinese elements for the appearance design of their products, imbuing them with natural and elegant characteristics inherent to Chinese classics.
Whether it is elegant Song-style or ornate Tang-style tableware, wine utensils with Qin-charm, covered tea bowls with Sichuan-Chongqing features, healthy and practical children’s tableware, creative souvenirs, or ceramic packaging for specialty agricultural products, many of his award-winning and patented designs have been accumulated through persistent exploration, grounded attention to market demands, and industrial technological development. These designs use industrial design methods to create exceptional products that can enhance people’s “sense of happiness” in their daily life.
It is a great honor for Yan Wei to be awarded the “Top 10 Industrial Designers of Sichuan and Chongqing.” He feels very gratified, stating, “This title is the best certification and encouragement for me and my team. It allows more people to learn about our career and the fruits of our efforts, giving us the confidence to continue exploring.”
Next, Yan Wei will further focus on everyday consumer goods, pay attention to every aspect of people’s life, and design more and better products. He aims for industrial design to not only empower production but also enhance the quality of beautiful life.
