Recently, the 2025 World Design Cities Conference was held in Shanghai, with the parallel “Creative Cities” Design Forum themed “Design Reshaping Traditional Crafts: Value and Innovation.” As a core forum of the World Design Cities Conference, it gathered representatives and internationally renowned experts from over 30 creative cities across 15 countries to discuss design’s core value and innovative pathways in inheriting millennia-old crafts, driving industrial transformation and upgrading, and promoting ecological sustainable development. As a UNESCO “City of Design,” Chongqing was invited to participate in this international event and shared its practices and reflections on empowering traditional craft innovation through design.

Through keynote presentations, case studies, and dialogue sessions, Chongqing delegates showcased the city’s progress in its City of Design initiative, demonstrating how modern design thinking is breathing new life into traditional crafts like Shu embroidery, Rongchang grass linen, Dazu stone carving, and Chongqing lacquerware. Notable innovations include merging the city’s distinctive cyberpunk aesthetic with exquisite Shu embroidery techniques to create fashion pieces that blend heritage with futuristic appeal, and applying advanced material science to transform translucent Rongchang grass linen into contemporary home decor and high-end fashion collections – successfully transitioning these crafts from cultural heritage to cutting-edge design.

During the conference, Chongqing representatives also explored potential collaborations with international creative cities including France’s Saint-Étienne and Italy’s Turin, discussing opportunities in digital transformation of handicrafts, joint talent development, and global brand promotion.

Participation in the World Design Cities Conference serves not only to showcase Chongqing’s design capabilities but also to facilitate global learning and resource exchange. Moving forward, Chongqing will continue to advance its City of Design vision by embracing international creative resources and further integrating design into urban development. This includes fostering deeper connections between design and cultural heritage, industrial innovation, and urban renewal – ultimately contributing unique “Mountain City Design Wisdom” to the global Creative Cities Network.
