On March 21, the eyes of the world’s top experts in digestive medicine were once again focused on Chongqing, as this tiny capsule became the center of global attention.

The 7th World Endoscopy Organization (WEO) Capsule Endoscopy Global Summit, co-hosted by the World Endoscopy Organization and the Digestive Physicians Branch of the Chinese Medical Doctor Association, was held that day at the headquarters of Jinshan Technology Group in Chongqing. Hundreds of thousands of doctors, researchers, and specialists from around the world participated both in person and online, injecting new momentum into the development of digestive endoscopy.

Leading digestive experts from China, France, Portugal, Italy, and other countries shared their insights through academic abstract presentations, keynote lectures, and roundtable discussions. They focused on the latest capsule endoscopy technologies and clinical applications, systematically exploring the core value of artificial intelligence (AI) in capsule endoscopy, the clinical application of full gastrointestinal tract capsule endoscopy, and the diagnosis of complex conditions such as Crohn’s disease. The event comprehensively showcased cutting-edge research achievements and clinical practice experience in the global capsule endoscopy field.

Capsule endoscopy is a high-tech medical product used to examine the human digestive tract. After the patient swallows the capsule with water, it moves through the digestive tract, capturing high-definition images and transmitting them to a doctor for analysis. Once the examination is complete, the capsule is naturally expelled from the body. With its core advantages—painlessness, non-invasiveness, no need for anesthesia, full gastrointestinal coverage, and a safe, comfortable examination process—capsule endoscopy has become the preferred option for gastrointestinal examinations worldwide.

What has captured the attention of the global digestive medicine community is Chongqing’s capacity to make its voice heard in the field of capsule endoscopy through cutting-edge technological strength.

China’s first capsule endoscopy—and the second in the world—was developed by Chongqing Jinshan Technology Group. Through years of continuous innovation, the company has also developed the world’s first fully automated navigational capsule endoscopy robot and China’s first AI-assisted image-reading software to receive Class III certification from the National Medical Products Administration (NMPA). If an examination can be done with a capsule, the experience is entirely different,” said Lars Aabakken, President of the World Endoscopy Organization.

Aabakken also told reporters, “I believe Jinshan Technology’s OMOM capsule is undoubtedly one of the leading products in the industry. I’m very pleased to say that I come from Oslo, Norway, where I work at the largest hospital. This year, our country has just introduced your OMOM capsule endoscopy.”

The AI technology integrated into Chongqing’s smartly manufactured capsule endoscopes has reached a world-leading level. Multiple clinical research results based on this technology have been published in top international medical journals, including The Lancet Gastroenterology & Hepatology. Research data confirms that AI significantly improves physicians’ diagnostic efficiency and lesion detection rates, reducing the average capsule endoscopy reading time from 29.7 minutes under traditional manual reading to just 2.3 minutes, while increasing lesion detection sensitivity from 88.1% to 98.8%.

“Our latest generation of capsule endoscopy is fully embedded with AI technology. The camera is high-definition, wide-angle, and features a high sampling frequency. Typically, capsules capture two to three images per second, but we can now capture eight to ten—a change of an order of magnitude, which enables more refined lesion examination,” said Wang Jinshan, Chairman of Chongqing Jinshan Technology (Group) Co., Ltd.
