YuHai: Driving Manufacturing Growth Through Design Innovation

Chongqing YuHai Industrial Design Research Institute Co., Ltd., established in July 2020, is a subsidiary of Chongqing YuHai Precision Manufacturing Co., Ltd., — a top 100 manufacturing enterprises in Chongqing and a national-level “Specialized, Refined, Unique, and New Little Giant” company. Leveraging a strong manufacturing foundation in electronics, new energy vehicles, and medical devices, and operating from a production base of 180,000 square meters, the parent company established the Research Institute as a strategic move into high-end producer services, aiming to accelerate manufacturing innovation through design.

Yuhai has been preparing for a NASDAQ listing, having signed an agreement with Singapore’s Jinhua Capital and Zhong Lun Law Firm (Shanghai), and completed the filing process with the Chongqing Municipal Financial Affairs Office.

Building an Integrated Industrial Design Ecosystem

The YuHai Industrial Design Research Institute is a technology-driven enterprise that leverages industrial design to enhance product innovation and accelerate time-to-market.

The institute advances the integration of design innovation and smart manufacturing, creating an ecosystem that encompasses R&D, branding, and talent development. Its team includes more than 40 professionals, including one PhD, three master’s degree holders, three senior industrial designers, and three intermediate-level designers. By pooling innovation resources from Chongqing universities, Yuhai integrates design expertise with manufacturing and investment systems to empower specialized industrial sectors,  including next-generation electronics, advanced intelligent equipment, connected new energy vehicles, healthcare products, smart manufacturing, the industrial IoT, high-end equipment, and 5G communications.

In talent development, YuHai has established long-term partnerships with institutions such as Sichuan Fine Arts Institute, Chongqing University, Southwest University, Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Hubei Academy of Fine Arts, Chongqing Jiaotong University, Chongqing Technology and Business University, Chongqing University of Technology, Chongqing Normal University, Chongqing Electromechanical Vocational and Technical College, National University of Singapore, and Temasek Polytechnic (Singapore). Through industry-education collaboration, YuHai provides scholarships, internships, and career opportunities for outstanding students.

In 2024, Yuhai launched the construction of a pilot base at the Engineering Center of Chongqing Vocational Institute of Engineering. With a total investment of over RMB 10 million, the project is expected to be completed by September 2025.

Market-Oriented Innovation

YuHai emphasizes market transformation through a full-cycle approach including market research, product definition, design development, pilot testing, and engineering implementation. This approach has enabled the creation of an integrated service platform that combines design, R&D, manufacturing, and commercialization.

Yuhai has developed numerous innovative products in recent years. For example, in collaboration with a local pharmaceutical company, it created an endoscopic hemostatic powder sprayer, which can stop bleeding within 30 seconds under endoscopic guidance—outperforming similar international products. After two years of development, the device received Class II medical device certification, breaking foreign patent barriers and achieving domestic innovation.

In the field of mass spectrometry, Yuhai established Chongqing Mass Spectrometry Technology Co., Ltd. through a “design + capital” model. In 2024, it successfully incubated a domestic mass spectrometer project and recruited leading experts to advance the R&D and manufacturing of liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry (LC–MS) systems. In collaboration with Tsinghua University and Peking University, Yuhai is also investing RMB 20 million in a mass spectrometer testing laboratory in Chongqing, aiming to build a nationally leading base for prototyping, production, and testing.

Awards and Recognitions

– In May 2021, the institute was awarded the “Workers’ Pioneer” title by Chongqing Federation of Trade Unions.

– In December 2021, it was recognized as a Municipal Industrial Design Center.

– In January 2022, it was designated as one of the first Chongqing Municipal Industrial Design Research Institutes.

– In May 2022, it was again awarded the “National Workers’ Pioneer” title.

To date, Yuhai has filed 52 patent applications, including three invention patents, 18 utility models, 30 design patents, and one software copyright. It has also registered eight domestic trademarks and submitted two international applications.

The company’s design works have earned multiple awards. Its Camping Mosquito Lamp won a bronze medal and was a finalist at the 2023 China Characteristic Tourism Commodity Competition. Its Smart Voice-Activated Bottle Opener won silver medals at both the 2024 Chongqing Tourism Commodities Competition and the National Tourism Commodities Competition.

To strengthen prototyping and small-batch rapid manufacturing capabilities, Yuhai launched the Agile Manufacturing Center Project in 2022, aiming to build a shared public service platform for manufacturing. In September 2023, Yuhai co-initiated the establishment of the Chongqing Manufacturing Design Association and became a council member. In the same year, it was recognized as a Chongqing Manufacturing Design Training Base.

Yuhai will continue to increase investment in technological innovation, strengthen intellectual property protection, and nurture design talent. With these efforts, the institute aims to deliver more outstanding industrial design achievements and contribute to Chongqing’s vision of becoming a world-class City of Design.
