Chongqing announces the launch of its Food Packaging Design Competition. This initiative aims to unlock creative potential, establish a collaborative platform across sectors, and propel the food industry forward by confronting key issues: lagging design concepts, a mismatch with modern consumption needs, and a slow adoption of innovative materials and technologies.

1. Competition Theme

Chongqing Taste in Packaging, Creativity in Bloom — Crafting a New Name Card for ‘Chongqing Flavor’

2. Organizing Structure

Organizer: Chongqing Municipal Commission of Economy and Information Technology

Co-organizers: Chongqing Manufacturing Talent Service Center (Chongqing Industrial Design Promotion Center), Chongqing Food Industry Association, Chongqing Packaging Association, Chongqing Manufacturing Design Federation, Chongqing Creative Designers Association, Chongqing Braised Meat Industry Alliance.

3. Competition Categories

Focusing on the key industrial chain of Chongqing’s food industry, the pain points of food packaging design are systematically sorted out, and it is divided into the following five categories:

(1) Grain, Oil and Condiments

Design for problems such as homogenization of packaging image in the grain, oil and condiment industry, easy to hang on the wall, and difficulty in controlling volume

Design requirements:

Strengthen the systematic combination design of visual elements such as graphics, colors, text, and layout, the scientific selection of food-grade anti-stick coatings and the application of precise control technology, build a simple, fashionable and branded visual image, accurately express product categories, tastes and other information, strengthen consumers’ memory and cognition of Chongqing grain, oil and condiments, and enhance the dissemination of products.

(2) Snack Foods

Design for outstanding problems such as easy splashing and traditional visual effects in the snack food industry

Design requirements:

Through the innovation of packaging structure such as pressure balance, liquid diversion, and opening control, the core characteristics of the product are deeply integrated, the youthful and networked product image is highlighted, and the stiffness and sealing process of packaging materials are optimized to enhance the user experience and brand image of snack products.

(3) Hotpot Ingredients

Design for outstanding problems such as anti-adhesion, leakage and oxygen resistance in the packaging of the hot pot food industry

Design requirements:

Optimize the internal separation and access logic, select materials with anti-adhesion, high sealability, and high barrier properties, and focus on the improvement of key technologies such as sealing, lamination, aeration, and stability to meet the needs of hot pot ingredients for protection and convenient use.

(4) Fruits, Vegetables & Teas

Design for outstanding problems such as fragile packaging and insufficient communication of regional characteristics in the fruit and vegetable tea industry

Design requirements:

Through the innovative design of packaging form, opening and closing methods, and internal structure, strengthen the fresh-keeping buffer and portable sealing performance, integrate natural aesthetics and modern language to convey regional culture and balance environmental protection and functional needs, achieve the unity of protection and aesthetic texture with the help of process design, and promote the transformation of regional culture into fashionable consumer products.

(5) Chongqing Braised Food

Designed for problems such as inconsistent brand identity of “Chongqing Braised Food” and obvious differentiation of packaging image

Design requirements:

Create a municipal-level regional brand image for “Chongqing Braised Food,” including the development of a brand logo. The design should emphasize the characteristics of the food industry and its regional relevance, accurately and ingeniously conveying the rich, aromatic essence of “braised food” and evoking the distinctive urban memories associated with “Chongqing.” The final brand identity should achieve harmony between graphics and text, be adaptable to various application scenarios, and possess high recognizability.

4. Entry Requirements

(1) Solicitation objects

Implement open competitions, and relevant enterprises, scientific research institutions, universities, individuals, teams, etc. at home and abroad can participate.

Encourage universities, scientific research institutions, design enterprises and food manufacturing enterprises to form consortiums to participate in the competition and provide representative and practical solutions for industry pain points.

(2) Submission Requirements:

The competition adopts online registration to collect works, and the entries must be sent as a compressed file to [email protected]. The email and compressed package naming format is “Participation category + subject (individual is the name, team is the team name, unit is the unit name) + work name”, the compressed file contains the registration form (Attachment 1) and work information, the format of the work data includes but is not limited to PPT, PDF, JPG, MP4 and other formats, and the video, animation, picture must be clear, and the text expression must be clear.

Deadline for submission: March 31, 2026.

(3) Entry Specifications:

1. Entries must be original works designed around the theme of this competition and the pain points of the designated categories.

2. The same work can only apply for one category, and each applicant can apply for multiple works. All entries must submit relevant entry materials in accordance with the requirements of the call for entries notice. Foreign works must be introduced and explained in Chinese.

3. The description of the work should include the creative and conceptual description of the work, the product definition, the overall photo of the sample, the brief design description, and the description of the key structure or key details, etc., and should focus on explaining how the work innovates for the pain points of the category, and reflects the sense of design, practicality and attractiveness.

4. Participants are encouraged to provide models, samples, or physical objects when registering. If the preliminary evaluation is passed, a model, sample or physical object of the work must be provided as required.

5. Awards

A total of four first prizes are set for the four categories of grains & condiments, snack foods, hotpot ingredients, and fruits & teas, with each winner receiving a bonus of RMB 200,000; eight second prizes, each with a bonus of RMB 50,000; and eight third prizes, each with a bonus of RMB 30,000.

For the Chongqing braised food category, three Brand Creativity Awards are established, each awarding RMB 20,000.

For participating university students, 20 Innovation & Creativity Awards are set, each with a bonus of RMB 3,000.

Several Excellence Awards will also be granted, with certificates presented to the winners.

The organizer reserves the right to adjust or withhold awards based on the quality of submitted works.

6. Other matters

(1) Intellectual property rights

1. Participants must be the designer or owner of the entry (the right party of the relevant intellectual property rights), and the entry must be free of any intellectual property disputes with third parties (intellectual property disputes have not occurred or have been properly handled so far). For works with intellectual property disputes, the organizer has the right to revoke the qualification of the work.

2. The intellectual property rights of all entries belong to the authors, and the organizer retains the right to promote, display, publish (including reproduction and distribution) and industrialization promotion and publicity of the entries of the competition.

(2) Delivery of goods

1. In principle, the model, sample or physical object of the entry will not be returned, and all costs such as transportation, insurance, customs duties and other expenses incurred in the delivery shall be borne by the participant.

(3) Other matters

1. For units participating in the consortium, the leading unit shall be responsible for the competition registration, docking contact, prize receipt, information registration, etc.
