2nd Chongqing Design 100 Enters Case Showcase Phase

The second “Chongqing Design 100” campaign has now entered its case showcase phase, highlighting the cutting-edge strengths of Chongqing’s design sector.

In September 2024, the Chongqing Daily Press Group launched the second “Chongqing Design 100” campaign to better promote Chongqing’s profile as a global “City of Design.” After three months of extensive solicitation and review, nearly 200 cases were submitted for participation. These cases covers a wide range of fields, including industrial design, engineering design, cultural design and fashion design. International exchange and cooperation initiatives, such as the China-Singapore Collaborative Design Plan project, are also involved.

Among these cases, Chongqing’s design capabilities demonstrate significant innovative value and functionality across economic, social, cultural, and technological domains. A common thread is using design to build competitiveness, enhance brands, and create greater value for business development.

Following this case exhibition, experts will be invited to conduct a comprehensive selection based on public feedback. Ultimately, a list of 100 outstanding cases leading innovation across ten categories within Chongqing’s design-related industries will be released. Additionally, the campaign will include a series of promotional activities and offline events for these outstanding projects, further polishing Chongqing’s name card as a global “City of Design.”

Design lights up a better life

Chongqing’s first national industrial design center, Chongqing Jinhui Ceramics Co., Ltd., recommended five innovative design products to the second “Chongqing Design 100” event, including children’s tableware, “Fantang” decanter set and camellia gaiwan tea. These products utilize the company’s self-developed, nationally patented self-sterilizing ceramic technology, making them not just daily-use items but also artworks integrating culture and technology.

Chongqing Yuhai Industrial Design and Research Institute recommended 4 innovative design products, including a camping mosquito killer lamps and a smart voice-activated bottle opener. The camping lamp not only kills mosquitoes and insects, but also integrates SOS emergency functions. The voice-activated bottle opener is an innovative product designed for social gatherings, using fun audio to create atmosphere. Its design incorporates stylized, IP-inspired chili elements, giving the product regional cultural significance.

Design reshapes urban spaces

The Democratic Village Community of Xiejiawan Street, Jiulongpo District is an old community in Chongqing, founded in the 50s of the 20th century, and is one of the supporting family areas of the former state-owned construction machine tool factory (formerly Hanyang Arsenal, which settled in Jiulongpo after moving west to Chongqing). After more than 70 years of urban development and changes and the demolition of construction plants, the democratic village community has changed from an enviable unit compound in the early days to an “old” community with disrepair, backward supporting facilities and insufficient services.

In November 2021, Chongqing Design Institute took the lead in starting the survey and design of the urban renewal project in the Minmin Village area of Jiulongpo District. At that time, the first batch of urban renewal pilot work in the country was officially launched, Jiulongpo became one of the pilot areas, and the urban renewal project in the Democratic Village area became a key pilot project. The design team proposed and determined the three new positioning of “new urban link”, “new home for residents” and “new world of entrepreneurship” in the democratic village with all parties involved in the construction, and adopted the design collaboration model of “one leader and multiple collaboration” to play a decisive role in the presentation of the project through the update methods such as “stock for increment, intelligent efficiency increase, and joint conspiracy to promote co-governance”.

According to the organic renewal and bottom-line control ideas of urban renewal, the design team sorted out the “positive and negative list” of the project background to formulate the strategy of retention, reform, demolition and addition, and realized the “four excellent communities” of people-oriented all-age-friendly communities, ecological priority green sponge communities, service-first future smart communities, and humanistic priority urban fireworks communities. Through the improvement of the “five major functions” of humanities, life, ecology, safety and industry in urban renewal, the “nine scenarios” of modern community governance have been created.

In the process of implementation, we actively participated in and cooperated with the preliminary work related to “asking the people for needs, financing funds, demolition and relocation by agreement”, which laid a solid foundation for the completion of the project. After the municipal optimization of the 7.4km road pipe network in the area, the renovation of 305,000 square meters of old housing, the improvement of 177,000 square meters of residential and public environment environment, and the improvement of 11,000 square meters of supporting supplements, the democratic village community has both the strong human feelings and fireworks atmosphere under the glorious historical accumulation, and has become a typical case of national complete community pilot and urban renewal because of its integrity and universality.
