In 2015, Bandung was awarded the title of “City of Design” by UNESCO. Known as the “Paris of the East”, Bandung is Indonesia’s third-largest city, and like the surrounding volcanoes, it is a vibrant, welcoming city with large and small streets dotted with modern décor. Bandung is famous for hosting the famous “Asian-African Conference” in history in 1955, and the “Bandung Spirit” with unity, friendship and cooperation as the core still has strong vitality and has become a guide for Asian and African countries to strengthen exchanges and cooperation.
Bandung currently hosts a series of workshops, conferences, and festivals aimed at encouraging the development of creativity, design prototyping, and product design. In fact, 56% of Bandung’s economic activity is related to design, with fashion, graphic design, and digital media topping the list in the local creative economy.

Bandung has 8 urban villages classified as creative villages with in-depth understanding and mature expertise in the development of creative cities. For example, Helarfest, one of the characteristic programs of the Bandung Creative Cities Forum (BCCF), which aims to promote networking between creative cities, is the Creative Cities Conference, which is an important platform for discussing sustainable urban development and exchanging ideas. Bandung has also created the “DesignAction.bdg Studio” to optimize inclusive public spaces through design and find concrete solutions that rely on citizen participation to solve urban problems. In addition, Bandung’s creative industries are developing rapidly and have a rich cultural and artistic heritage, such as Indonesia’s University of Fine Arts, Bandung University of Science and Technology, Bandung Institute of Technology, Bose Observatory and Nuclear Research Center. The Bandung City Government is firmly committed to promoting the development of the creative economy, establishing new centers and industrial zones, providing R support and conducting R activities.

During the construction of the Design Capital, Bandung set up a UNESCO “Creative Cities Network” theme park to showcase different forms of creative cities and urban cultural diversity; Strengthen collaboration with other “Creative Cities” through creative festivals, joint events and workshops, in particular through the organization of the annual Asian-African Carnival to promote underrepresented cities and promote South-South cooperation; and the establishment of 30 creative centers within 5 years and support for 100,000 new creative entrepreneurs to promote the local creative economy, in particular the implementation of the “Little Bandung” initiative, the establishment of exclusive exchange venues for product development with other cities in the network, workshops and events.
